  • A rare storyline that is desired and has believable characters. unexpected and touching ending.commend to all (paperback!) fantastic movie!

  • Disclaimer: I do not normally read books that are classed as "romance."And this book was horrible. Not just the plotline (LOL WHAT IS THAT) but the writing. If I wrote a plethora of sentence similar to this, but more boring, I would be like Bradford. You wouldn't understand why I am so well known, and would view me as annoying, frustrating, and a pain. The sentences I write are never complex, just very long-winded. You'd almost call them tedious, perhaps even boring. Maybe you'd say that I need a [...]

  • I think what annoyed me the most about this book - and this makes me sad to say it, because I *loved* Barbara Taylor Bradford's Emma Harte series (the first three only, the rest were like afterthoughts) - is because BTB's characters in this book are American, yet despite her best efforts, they still hopelessly sound like Brits (same thing with her novel Everything To Gain). It just strikes me as utterly unbelievable that a thirtysomething American guy would describe a cute-as-a-button little gir [...]

  • boring and very repetitive lacked imagination and a tired subject. 2 stars because it gave me something to do for a total of 1h and change

  • A quick 1/2 day read. Not going to lie - I chose this one, that has actually been on my shelf for ages, because it was only 175 pages. I am (was) 4 books behind my goal for the year - gotta hustle! This was a bit of an abridged Nicholas Sparks novel. that's all I'll say about that. Then again, the book is from 1996 - unlikely any of my friends will ever read it!

  • Very disappointing, not one of the best BTB books, but I don't think any of her books will be as good as the Emma Harte series. Didn't enjoy it at all.

  • This is the first time that I have tried to read one of the wrings of Ms Barbara Taylor Bradford which is the Secret Affair. Reading her novel is a great a privilege of mine, because it allows me to wander and have a concrete picture in my mind of what my dream country would be like especially Venice in Europe. In which, I think part of being a wanderer in her writings is myself became an explorer and a traveler from my mother country the Philippines to Europe in Venice which I always wish I can [...]

  • Perhaps the book jacket killed it for me because it gave the entire game away, just about. Nevertheless, I managed to sit through the book but came away perplexed as to how Barbara Taylor Bradford could be claimed as "one of the great storytellers of our time".Because really, she didn't tell the story so much as reported it line by line. Oh sure, there was the gratuitous love-making halfway where we were told it was passionate. But as far as chemistry was concerned, it was even less than textboo [...]

  • This is a must read!!!! A love affair with a surprise ending. A television war correspondent, Bill Fitzgerald and a glass designer, Vanessa Stewart meet in Venice and start an affair. She is married to a man that work and money is more important than her, finds love and solace in Bill. Bill is willing to have her an any terms. They meet in Venice and New York when they can. Bill has a daughter being a widower, who lives with Bill's mom. When they all meet the connection is obvious. Bill is makin [...]

  • This is one of my favorite authors. Having said that, I was greatly disappointed with this book. The storyline, while believable leaves a lot to be desired. There is no opportunity to get to know the characters—Bill and Vanessa—other than through their lust. I’m used to a much broader storyline that allows the reader to get involved with the characters. Other than the travel—since Bill is a news journalist reporting events in war zones—until he dies—there’s no real way to get engag [...]

  • A 33-year-old tv war correspondent who recently did a stint in Bosnia, Bill Fitzgerald decides to go to Venice to relax. While there, he meets 27-year-old Vanessa Stewart, an American woman who is a glass designer from New York. Unhappily married, Vanessa begins a no-strings attached friendship with Bill which quickly blossoms into an illicit affair. The lovers agree to meet each other as much as possible after they return home. However, on the third rendevous one of them doesn't show up. I thou [...]

  • I am dumber for having read this book. In regards to reviewing this book there is the potential for me to rattle on and on forever - but I'm going to keep it short. This is the Kmart of romance novels. One step up from Walmart but not that far up. It read like a Dick and Jane book. "Bill is a successful man. Bill is a journalist. Bill said, 'Darn it!' Vanessa makes beautiful glass decorations, is unrealistically successful and visits Venice. Yay, Vanessa!" Just so overly simplistic you could fee [...]

  • I have never liked cheating women. This book was about a woman who cheated on her husband so I was immediately disgusted with her. The story line was predictable. The woman divorced her husband, kept meeting up with the boyfriend for rendezvous. The ending was different than I had imagined, but still, the overall story was uninspired.

  • very short - approx 180 pages of paperback surprised there wasno mention of bill's funeral also how could his daughter spend the summer with vanessa - what aboout school? perhaps it was just for the summer holidays no brain needed for this one! bev

  • Although a sweet love story, it did not allow me to totally see the depth of their claimed love. I thought it needed more shared times and feelings of the two main characters for me to get sucked into it. I liked it, but I did not love it. Not even with Venice as the backdrop.

  • I like this book, but not as much as the Emma Harte series. Additionally, the ending is not what the reader would expect .

  • My first one of Barbara Taylor. She kept it crisp and brief, Usual one but never missed the sad, happy and close to heart feel.
